How to Get an Accident Report | Joel H. Schwartz, P.C.

How to Get an Accident Report

After an accident, you will receive plenty of advice, both solicited and unsolicited, about what your next step should be.

That being said, one of the most important things you can do is obtain a copy of the police accident report. While many people wonder how to get an accident report, the answer is not as complicated as it may seem.

Your Options

The accident report is important because it details the observations of the police officers who were called to the scene. If you prefer, your attorney can acquire the report for you. If you choose to obtain it yourself, you may do so either in person or by mail.

In Person

If you choose to pick up your report in person, you will need to go to the Boston Police Headquarters located at the following address:

1 Schroeder Plaza

Roxbury, MA 02120

Apply in person on the first floor at the Public Service Unit, which is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

By Mail

You may also request your police accident report by mail. You will need to send a request in writing to the following address:

Boston Police Headquarters
1 Schroeder Plaza
Roxbury, MA 02120

Direct your request to “Attention: Police Reports.” You will need to have information pertinent to the accident such as the date, the parties involved, your vehicle registration number, and the location of the accident included in your request.

There is a five dollar service fee for any request that is processed through the mail, so you will need to include a check payable to the Boston Police Department.

Accident Reports Have Important Information

The police accident report will provide important information such as the observations of the police officers at the scene; names, addresses, and telephone numbers of witnesses; drivers license numbers of the parties involved; license plate numbers; vehicle descriptions; and insurance information.

This information can be invaluable if you were unable to obtain it at the scene of the accident.
